WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

A satellite systems technician is responsible for installing, repairing and replacing communication networks, telecommunication equipment and satellite systems.

Your work can vary from installing new systems and improving presented system for an industry to realigning and refurbishing equipment after hurricane damage on a home land.

Your duties and responsibilities can involve:

  • scheduling cabling networks
  • performing site survey to prepare job quotes
  • fix and put in satellite and aerials to grow
  • linking signal channel sockets

  • ensuring the strength of signal levels
  • examining equipment and fixing mistakes

You will make use of range of equipment which includes power drills, tools and signal quality meters. You will have to follow exhaustive engineering design plans for more complex installation.

QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:-

You have to finish an apprenticeship in telecom technician to turn into a satellite technician. To board to a scheme, you may require GCSEs in English, Science or other equivalent qualifications.

TRAINING DETAILS:-

Once you have started working, you can work towards a range of qualifications, like:

  • NVQ Engineering Maintenance and Installation (Communication Electronics Maintenance) Level 2
  • Certificate in Digital Television Aerial Installation, City and Guilds, Level 2
  • BTEC HNC/HND in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (Communication)
  • NVQ in Electronics and Electrical Servicing (Signal Reception) Level 2 and 3

You can make improvements in your skills and abilities by taking a Level 2 City and Guilds Diploma in Digital Home Technology Integrators (DHTI) (7266/28). The qualification shows that you have the skills to configure the increasing range of household digital electronics, which includes audio, cinema, computer and satellite systems. If you have taken a certificate of NVQ in this field, you can apply to become a Registered Digital Installer (RDI). In addition to an NVQ, you will require:

  • Working at heights training
  • Clearance of CRB i.e. Criminal Record Bureau
  • Public liability insurance

SALARY AND OTHER BENEFITS:-

  • Fresher's can be paid from $ 14,000 to $ 17,000 a year.
  • Skilled technicians can make over $ 20,000.
  • Technicians with development or administrative duties can get up to $ 30,000 a year.

WORKING CONDITIONS:-

Your normal working hours will be from 40 to 45 hours every week, including evenings and weekends. You may also have on hand duties to cover up off-peak hours and emergencies.

Some of your work like installation of dist, aerials, will comprise of working at heights on ladder, roofs or scaffolding.

DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES:-

There will be great demand for the digital technician in 2012, as a switchover from terrestrial to digital TV takes place in the United Kingdom.
