WORK ENVIRONMENT:-

Merchant Navy deck officer carry out the work on the ship container vessels, tankers, bulk carriers, ferries and cruise liners. They are responsible for managing the ship's routing, crew, shipment and communication. They also care for passenger on the ships and participate in the on-board communal events.

Being a deck officer, you will work on one of the following four levels, as per your experience:

  • Master (Captain)- you will have full responsibility for the overall functioning and security of the ship, cargo, passenger and crew. You will be dealing with the lawful and marketable issues and maintain records of the ship.
  • Chief Officer- you will assist the Master and manage deck process and maintenance, cargo space and consignment handing. You will deal with schedules of work and administer other officers.

  • Second Officer- you will be liable for map reading, utilizing radar, computer system and satellite. You will also check the position of the vessel, direction, speed and weather reports, and perform the watch tasks in the port or at the sea.
  • Third Officer- this will generally be your preliminary position after your training, coping with the ship's safety tools and equipments and lifeboats. You will help the Second Officer and perform the watch duties and responsibilities.

You can enter this field (Merchant Navy) from age of 16 onwards as an officer trainee or marine trainee, if you have 4 GCSEs grade or corresponding qualifications. You can also enter into the Merchant Navy by completing an industry-backed foundation degree, Science degree at university or Scottish Professional Certificate. TRAINING DETAILS:-

Your training will include aground college-based study with maritime assignments to provide you realistic experience of working on the ship. You will work for a foundation degree and Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency, which is honored by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). It basically requires three to four years to meet the criteria as a junior officer (Third Officer).

Once skilled, you can take additional training to develop your qualification and skills and elevate all the way through the officers grades. Every grade needs a particular MCA qualification.

If you are a graduate entrant, you will have to join an acknowledge development program meant at permitting you to achieve the higher officer ranks in the short time.

WORKING CONDITIONS:-

Merchant Navy vessels operate around the clock and you will work in shifts, called as 'watches' that differ as per your ship size. On a huge vessel, you will have to work for four hours on responsibilities followed by eight hours off.

Your time at the sea can differ from various days or weeks to several months. Periods of leaves between voyages will also differ.

You will be working on the deck and on the bridge in every weather conditions. You will have to work in the combat zones if you are working with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

You can get both the offshore and onshore post with the shipping organizations, maritime insurance companies, port authorities and shipping brokers. You can also utilize your skills and knowledge to shift to the managerial position in the other commercial and industrialized division.
